Stop motion creation at The Leonardo

Friday, August 5, 2011

Blog entry by Danielle Follett Chard, The Leonardo's marketing specialist.

The Leonardo's 'Render' exhibit is going to give visitors a chance to experience some of the latest and greatest in digital media technology. Our first exhibit will focus on the ever-dynamic field of animation.
But what's truly exciting about this space is that not only will you learn about what others are doing in the world of animation, but you'll also get to try your hand at it as well. You'll can dive in to make your own animations, ranging from the simple zoetrope to using green screen and motion capture technology. Just like the stop-motion animation that was made at our pilot event, visitors will be able to create complete stop-motion films in this space.
And to get you all excited and get your creative gears turning, we thought we'd share three of our favorite stop motion films we've seen around the web.

The patterns and movement in this one are absolutely mind-blowing! The placement of each of the hundreds of coins is so precise and creates a flawless finished product.

A SHORT LOVE STORY IN STOP MOTION from Carlos Lascano on Vimeo.
This little film doesn't look like a standard stop motion-- the camera movement gives it a very unique look and feel. And the story is so beautiful it makes me feel inspired to create my own story and tell it through film!

And, of course, we had to share the incredible Her Morning Elegance vidoe by Oren Lavie. We know; it was an internet sensation a few years ago when it first came out. But it's still super beautiful. The video-- which was shot in 48 hours with no breaks-- is a perfect example of how time consuming (but rewarding!) stop motion can be.

We hope you've enjoyed a look at some of our favorite stop motions, and we'd love to see yours! Share them in the comments or on our Facebook wall.
