Building renovation update

Friday, August 26, 2011

Blog entry by Danielle Follett Chard, The Leonardo's marketing specialist.

It's been quite a while since we've shown you guys what's happening in our building, but the time has come for another look at all the progress we've made. Luckily enough, I was able to tour the building  and get a close look at what's happened and what's left to do. We designed with a LEED Silver Certification for the building in mind, so all materials that we used meet those environmentally-friendly requirements.

Dynamic Performance of Nature, an art piece that was selected by a panel for the people of Salt Lake City, has been installed. This piece is stunning in person (my picture does not do it justice!) because it lights up and glows with hundreds of LED lights that represent local and global climate data. The piece is constructed out of recycled materials, so it's both aware of the environment and environmentally friendly.

The escalators have been covered with drop cloths and scaffolding because the Beesley team moved in and began installing Hylozoic Ground this week. We'll be blogging about that soon, so stay tuned to see more updates on that installation!

The building has been painted, floors have been laid, and lights are installed.  Many of the historic leaf lights have been left in place and those who had to move for exhibit purposes have been carefully stored and preserved in the basement.

Temporary walls built by our crew are being installed in exhibit spaces. These walls were designed and constructed so they can be used multiple times in many different areas of the museum, thus eliminating the waste that would come from custom building and installing walls for each new exhibit.

The marble and wood walls in the building are historic, and we are carefully preserving them. Because this preservation means we can't alter or hang anything on them, huge amounts of gallery space were going to be lost. However, we have been able to carefully cover some of the panels with temporary walls in areas where we need the gallery space. This allows us to have a high-functioning museum and dynamic space while perfectly preserving the historic walls underneath and allowing them to show through in other areas.
Our Human Rights Gallery has been installed. We also utilized some of the many temporary walls to construct this space.

The original handrail in the building was too low to meet regulations, so we added height to meet code while using the same wood and design.

A look out our the windows of our third floor event space that have a spectacular view of downtown Salt Lake.

So as you can see, lots of exciting things have been happening at the building with many more to come as we gear up and push installation into overdrive. And if you'd like to help out, we're still looking for volunteers, particularly for our Beesley installation we mentioned earlier. If you'd like to work with this renowned architect and artist and help install this amazing installation, please visit this page to learn more and to apply.
