Getting Wheels Turning (over 11,000 of them!)

Thursday, June 16, 2011

Blog entry by Danielle Follett Chard, the Leonardo's marketing specialist.

You've heard it more than once and we'll happily say it again -- we have an amazing education team that travels around the state to bring science education to Utah students. The Leo on Wheels has officially wrapped up this school year and tallied their final numbers. They were so impressive we had to jump on here and share what great work this team is doing.

Over the 2010-2011 school year, the LOW team worked with 388 classes, 9,670 students, and 2,119 Community Night attendees. All in all, that's a whopping 11,206 people this small team were able to serve. This year was also the first year the team was able to provide teachers with lesson plans and teacher guides that related to the theme of each LOW visit, which created a more well-rounded experience for students.

Mrs. Young, a science teacher at Early Light Academy said of the experience, "Thank you, thank you, thank you! I loved seeing [the students] explore and discover new things in new ways. There is no substitute for hands on learning, and having resources like the Leo on Wheels come to our school helps expose the kids to things we can't provide with our limited resources. I appreciated all that went into getting here, setting up, executing a great, hands-on science week, and even the takedown and hauling away. You are welcome to come anytime and pilot new exhibits at our school."

All in all, these numbers and the enthusiastic response mean the Leo on Wheels's 7th year was a smashing success! In those seven years, they've brought their exciting lessons and exhibits to an incredible 67,725 students, 747 teachers, and 13,316 Community Night attendees, bringing their grand total to 81,073 Utahns served. And now that we'll be moving into our building, schools will be able to bring their students to our facilities so they can experience all of our exhibits. If you'd like to learn more about our field trips and pass along some information to local schools, visit the education website.

And if you or your child had an experience with LOW, let us know on our Facebook page! We'd love to hear your experience and we'd be happy to pass along some props to the great people on our team.

Become a fan of The Leonardo on Facebook or follow us on Twitter! No. Seriously. We'd love it.
