How do you process information?
Friday, May 20, 2011
Blog entry by Danielle Follett Chard, The Leonardo's marketing specialist.Something we're always interested in is how people interpret and synthesize data. Knowing how people respond to the information presented to them is vital to creating informative and engaging content for our exhibits. The fine line between overwhelming and underwhelming is a delicate one to walk, and we strive to create exhibits with layers that everyone can enjoy-- people who want to skim can still find interesting content, but people who want to really dive into the information can spend hours exploring and learning. This way we can create a museum that becomes an experience you want it to be. Whether you have one hour or five, everyone will be able to leave with a really rich experience. This requires us to always present information in a really interesting way.

We've identified one vital web component for presenting data in a more engaging way: an infographic. These doodles can turn even the most boring numbers and figures into interesting data charts with handy pictures. Information graphics have technically been around since prehistory (cave paintings, anyone?) but we much prefer the artsy and informative versions popping up all over the web, like this funny from Smarter.org or the image below by Column Five Media.

These informative, fun, and easy to understand infographics are similar to many of the things we're implementing into our exhibit designs. Computer stations with special software will allow to you peruse loads of information and engaging videos will explain everything from algae to making microchips. So make sure you continue to follow our blog, Twitter, and Facebook pages so you can mark your calendars when we announce our opening date. Because in just a little while you'll be able to experience these exhibits and explore this exciting information yourself!
